Bio
American anaesthesiologist who devised the Apgar score in 1952, a rapid five-point assessment of a newborn's condition in the minutes after birth. The score gave clinicians a standard, comparable measure and is credited with substantially improving newborn survival worldwide. She later led research programmes on birth defects at the March of Dimes and helped establish perinatology as a field.
