English novelist and essayist central to literary modernism, whose works include Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse and The Waves, developing narrative techniques that follow consciousness rather than external plot. Her essay A Room of One's Own examined the material conditions required for women to write. She co-founded the Hogarth Press and lived with recurrent mental illness until her death by suicide.
