Athenian philosopher who wrote nothing himself and is known through the accounts of Plato, Xenophon and Aristophanes. He practised a method of persistent questioning that exposed contradictions in confident claims, an approach still called Socratic. Tried for impiety and corrupting the young, he was sentenced to death and drank hemlock, a case long debated in discussions of dissent and law.
