Brazilian footballer, born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, who won the World Cup three times, in 1958, 1962 and 1970, the only player to do so. He scored over a thousand career goals by common count and spent most of his club career at Santos before joining the New York Cosmos, a move credited with expanding interest in football in the United States.
