Brazilian educator whose adult literacy programmes in north-east Brazil linked reading with analysis of learners' own social conditions. Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1968) criticised what he called the banking model of education and became one of the most cited books in the social sciences. He was imprisoned and exiled after the 1964 coup and later served as São Paulo's education secretary.
