Bio

Bangladeshi economist who founded Grameen Bank in 1983, extending small collateral-free loans, largely to women in rural Bangladesh, and popularising microcredit worldwide. He shared the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize with the bank. Later research produced mixed evidence on microcredit's poverty effects, and he served as head of Bangladesh's interim government from 2024.
