Bio

American economist and 1976 Nobel laureate known for monetary theory, the permanent income hypothesis and A Monetary History of the United States, written with Anna Schwartz. He argued for limited government intervention, floating exchange rates and rule-based monetary policy. His ideas influenced policy in several countries, and his advisory contacts, including with Chile in the 1970s, remain contested.
