Bio

English scientist, largely self-taught, whose discovery of electromagnetic induction in 1831 underpins electric generators and transformers. He described the laws of electrolysis, discovered benzene, introduced the concept of the electromagnetic field, and identified diamagnetism. Working at the Royal Institution, he also established the Christmas Lectures, a long-running tradition of public science communication.
