Bio

Polish-born physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity, a term she coined, and who discovered the elements polonium and radium with Pierre Curie. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person to win in two scientific fields, and she organised mobile radiography units during the First World War. She died of aplastic anaemia linked to radiation exposure.
