Maria Montessori

Bio

Italian physician and educator, among the first women to qualify in medicine in Italy, who opened the Casa dei Bambini in Rome in 1907. Her observational method emphasised prepared environments, self-directed activity and mixed-age classes. Montessori schools now operate in more than a hundred countries, and she was nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize.
