Bio

Indian lawyer who developed mass nonviolent civil resistance, first in South Africa and then in the Indian independence movement, leading campaigns including the 1930 Salt March. His methods influenced later civil rights and anti-colonial movements. His views on caste and some of his personal conduct have been subject to significant historical criticism. He was assassinated in January 1948.
