Bio

American trumpeter and singer from New Orleans whose Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings in the 1920s shifted jazz from collective ensemble playing toward the improvised solo. His phrasing and scat singing influenced generations of instrumentalists and vocalists across genres. He toured internationally for decades, and his public caution on civil rights drew criticism from some contemporaries.
