Italian painter, draughtsman and engineer whose works include the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. His notebooks, running to thousands of pages, contain anatomical studies based on dissection, hydraulic and mechanical designs, and observations on optics and geology, most unpublished in his lifetime. He is often cited as the defining example of Renaissance breadth across art and science.
