Russian novelist whose War and Peace and Anna Karenina are regarded among the major achievements of realist fiction. After a moral crisis he adopted a form of Christian anarchism and pacifism, set out in works such as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, which influenced Gandhi. He founded a school for peasant children on his estate at Yasnaya Polyana.
