Bio

American mathematician at NACA and later NASA whose orbital-mechanics calculations supported the first US crewed spaceflights, including Alan Shepard's 1961 flight and John Glenn's 1962 orbit, which Glenn asked her to verify. She worked in the segregated West Area Computing unit and contributed to Apollo mission calculations. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.
