Bio

British philosopher and political economist whose On Liberty (1859) argued that state or social power over the individual is justified mainly to prevent harm to others, and whose Utilitarianism refined Bentham's framework. With Harriet Taylor Mill he wrote The Subjection of Women. As a member of Parliament he proposed extending the vote to women in 1867. He also worked for the East India Company.
