German philosopher whose Critique of Pure Reason (1781) argued that the mind actively structures experience, reframing debates between rationalism and empiricism. In ethics he proposed the categorical imperative, judging actions by whether their principle could be universalised. His essay Perpetual Peace influenced later thinking on international law. Passages in his writings on race have drawn substantial modern criticism.
