Bio

English mathematician and physicist whose Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica (1687) set out the laws of motion and universal gravitation, providing the framework for classical mechanics for more than two centuries. He developed calculus independently of Leibniz, conducted foundational work in optics, and served as Warden and then Master of the Royal Mint and President of the Royal Society.
