Ibn Khaldun

North African historian and jurist whose Muqaddimah, written in 1377 as an introduction to universal history, analysed the rise and decline of states through social cohesion, economics, geography and group solidarity. Modern scholars regard it as an early work of sociology, historiography and economics. He also served as a judge and diplomat under several dynasties.
