American woman whose cervical cancer cells were taken during treatment at Johns Hopkins in 1951 without her knowledge or consent. The resulting HeLa line was the first human cells to grow indefinitely in culture and has been used in tens of thousands of studies, including polio vaccine testing and cancer research. Her case became central to debates on medical consent and compensation.
