Grace Hopper

Bio

American computer scientist and United States Navy rear admiral who worked on the Harvard Mark I, developed one of the first compilers, and promoted machine-independent programming languages. Her work directly influenced the creation of COBOL, which ran business and government systems for decades. She retired from the Navy at 79 as one of its oldest serving officers.
