Bio

Augustinian friar and scientist in Brno whose experiments with pea plants, published in 1866, established statistical laws of inheritance now known as Mendelian genetics. His results were largely overlooked during his lifetime and were rediscovered around 1900, becoming a foundation of modern genetics. He later served as abbot of his monastery, which reduced his time for research.
