Bio
Italian astronomer, physicist and mathematician whose telescopic observations documented Jupiter's four largest moons, the phases of Venus and lunar topography. His work on motion and his advocacy of heliocentrism advanced observational astronomy and experimental method. In 1633 the Roman Inquisition tried him over his defence of Copernican theory and he spent his remaining years under house arrest.
