Mexican painter known for self-portraits that combine Mexican folk traditions, symbolism and direct depiction of physical pain following a severe bus accident at eighteen. She painted around 143 works, more than a third of them self-portraits, and engaged with questions of identity, the body and post-revolutionary Mexican culture. Her international reputation grew substantially after her death.
