Bio
British nurse and statistician who organised nursing care during the Crimean War and used statistical analysis, including polar-area diagrams, to demonstrate that most soldier deaths came from preventable disease. Her subsequent reports shaped British military and civilian sanitation policy, and the training school she founded at St Thomas' Hospital in 1860 helped establish nursing as a professional discipline.
