Bio
British-American physician who in 1849 became the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States, graduating first in her class at Geneva Medical College after numerous rejections. She co-founded the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children, established a women's medical college, and later helped found the London School of Medicine for Women.
