Bio

American political economist whose fieldwork on fisheries, forests, irrigation systems and pastures documented how communities govern shared resources sustainably through local rules, monitoring and sanctions. Her book Governing the Commons challenged the assumption that common resources inevitably collapse without privatisation or state control. In 2009 she became the first woman awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.
