Bio

American surgeon who in 1893 performed one of the first documented successful pericardial surgeries, repairing the sac around a stabbing victim's heart. He founded Provident Hospital in Chicago in 1891, the first Black-owned and interracial hospital in the United States, which also ran a nursing school for Black students at a time of widespread exclusion from training.
