Bio
Swedish economist and diplomat who served as the second Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953 until his death. He developed the framework for UN peacekeeping, deploying the first emergency force during the 1956 Suez Crisis, and expanded the office's independent diplomatic role. He died in a plane crash in what is now Zambia and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize posthumously.
