Indian economist and philosopher awarded the 1998 Nobel Memorial Prize for work in welfare economics and social choice theory. His research on famines argued they can occur without a fall in food supply, driven instead by loss of entitlement. His capability approach, developed with Martha Nussbaum, underpins the United Nations Human Development Index.
