Alexander Fleming

Bio

Scottish bacteriologist who observed in 1928 that a Penicillium mould inhibited bacterial growth on a contaminated culture plate, identifying penicillin. He was unable to purify or mass-produce it; that work was carried out by Howard Florey, Ernst Chain and their Oxford team. The three shared the 1945 Nobel Prize, and Fleming publicly warned early about antibiotic resistance.
