Polish-born American virologist who developed the oral live-attenuated polio vaccine, first tested at scale in the Soviet Union around 1959 and adopted worldwide because it was cheap, easy to administer and interrupted transmission. His vaccine became the principal tool of global polio eradication campaigns. He also researched encephalitis, dengue and other viral diseases.
