American virologist who developed the first widely used inactivated polio vaccine, tested in a mass field trial in 1954 and licensed in 1955 as epidemics were disabling and killing children across many countries. He declined to patent the vaccine, and later founded the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California.
