Bio

South African cardiac surgeon who performed the first human-to-human heart transplant in December 1967 at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. The patient survived eighteen days before dying of pneumonia. The operation drew global attention and accelerated work on transplant immunology, surgical technique and definitions of death, and he continued transplant work as survival rates improved.
