Scottish moral philosopher whose The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) and An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776) helped establish political economy as a field. He analysed the division of labour, markets and self-interest, while also writing on sympathy, and on the limits of merchants' influence over public policy.
