Valentina Tereshkova

Bio

Soviet cosmonaut who became the first woman in space on 16 June 1963, flying solo aboard Vostok 6 and completing forty-eight orbits over almost three days. A former textile worker and amateur parachutist, she was selected from more than four hundred applicants. She later trained as an engineer and held political office in the Soviet Union and Russia.
